5 Unique Summer Experiences in New Jersey

By Lisa Fant

New Jersey offers a treasure trove of hidden gems and offbeat adventures waiting to be discovered. These towns and experiences off the beaten path are a must-see this summer for newcomers and long-time residents alike.

Created by Paterson native Ricky Boscarino, an artist and craftsman from a lineage of artists, Luna Parc is an eclectic and unusual art environment. The attraction, which is also Boscarino’s private home, has been an ongoing project since 1989. Located in Sandyston, the semi-private museum and workshop sprawls six acres and is regarded as “New Jersey’s quirkiest home.”

Twice a year, during summer and fall, Boscarino opens his home studio to the public for tours of the home’s interior and exterior to explore the whimsical wonderland. Boasting eclectic art such as “face pots,” towers built from glass soda bottles and car headlights, colorful tile mosaics, and even a 10-foot skeleton, visitors looking for a unique twist on a typical art exhibit can walk through a one-of-a-kind imaginative and creative experience unlike anything else in the state.

Consider a pedal boat ride on the picturesque Wesley Lake. Situated between Asbury Park and Ocean Grove, this tranquil lake was once home to a large, motorized swan boat back in the 1960s, drawing visitors from all over the state.

Although the beloved historical swan boat has since been retired, Wesley Lake now welcomes smaller swan pedal boats for visitors’ enjoyment. The fleet has been updated with vibrant new swans, a flamingo, and even a green dragon. The Asbury Park pedal boats could make for a relaxing afternoon activity, perfect for families and visitors seeking a memorable time at the shore.

Nestled within the Pine Barrens, Batsto Village offers a fascinating glimpse into New Jersey’s colonial past. Step into a history as you explore the meticulously preserved colonial settlement, with well-preserved buildings showcasing a community that thrived as far back as 1766.

Explore the storied halls of the 32-room mansion and immerse yourself in the living history of Batsto Village as you stroll past the blacksmith shop, the general store, or stop by the Batsto Post Office, one of the four oldest post offices currently operating in the United States.

Batsto Village offers an array of events throughout the year for everyone in the family. Climb aboard a horse-drawn wagon and explore the village or join a group hike through the Pinelands.

Deep Cut Gardens in Middletown is a hidden gem for horticulture enthusiasts, home gardeners seeking inspiration, and those who appreciate pristine landscapes. The 54 acres of gardens offer a vast collection of over 50 varieties of rose bushes, an array of native and exotic plants, and unique landscaped sculptures.

Beloved by locals, Deep Cut Gardens is cherished by the community, serving as a source for seeking expert gardening advice and inspiration. Whether you aim to improve your gardening skills or simply spend a day immersed in nature, the gardens offer an ideal retreat.

Experience the rural charm of New Jersey with a visit to Valley Shepherd Creamery in Long Valley. Just an hour outside of New York City, the creamery is located on more than 120 acres of land with over 700 sheep, goats, and cows, and welcomes visitors to learn about the art of cheesemaking and farming. The old-fashioned creamery creates over thirty types of fresh artisan cheeses, butter, and yogurt.

Visitors can take a wagon ride up the mountain to tour the farm and inside the cheese aging cave, then stop by the creamery shop for more specialty foods, cheese boards, and gifts. Stop by for a lamb tour, where you can spend time holding, photographing, and playing with the farm’s newborn lambs and goat kids.
