7 Tips for a Cozier Home this Winter

By Erin McFeeters

The first day of winter isn’t until Dec. 21, but the first frost has already hit most of New Jersey. If you have nowhere warm to escape to this season, follow these tips to create your own winter retreat.

Snag Some Slippers

Nothing says cozy more than putting on slippers right when you wake up in the morning. Stash your slippers close to the bed, and your toes will never have to touch the cold tile floor in the morning. For a bargain, try a pair from Shoprite or Costco, or splurge at Lands’ End or L.L. Bean.

Add Winter Throw Pillows to Your Décor

N.J. residents hunker down in the winter months, so try a few textured throw pillows and you may never want to leave your couch again. Faux fur, cable knit, velvet, and chenille are all in style this holiday season. You can buy brand new pillows or just the covers to reinvent up existing ones.

Spruce up Your Bedding

If you still have your summer quilt on your bed, stop everything you’re doing and find a down comforter. There’s nothing quite like a fluffy comforter to make you want to stay in bed all day, so snuggle up and let the Hallmark Christmas movie marathon begin.

Light Candles

Create ambiance and allow aromas to swirl through the air by lighting a few candles throughout your home. If you have pets or children, try a wax melter. Your home will still smell like a winter wonderland but without the open flame.

Cozy up with a Throw Blanket

Whether it’s a faux fur blanket or one your grandmother knit, there’s nothing better than snuggling on the couch with a blanket and a cup of hot cocoa. Drape blankets over sofas in every room and your home will feel like it transformed into a cozy upstate ski lodge.

Bring Plants Indoors

Even though the weather is turning cold, it doesn’t mean your outdoor plants have to die. Consider bringing a few indoors to liven up your space during the dreary months. Fun fact: plants help make the air in your home healthier.

Cover Up Your Drafty Windows

Windows are notorious for letting cold air into your home, even if the sealant is perfect. Help prevent drafts and create a cozier space with curtains. Find a set that matches your preexisting décor or go with a pop of color to create a fun and warm space.
